With lifetime collections of about Rs 70 crore, Hindi Medium was a huge success at the domestic box-office. The critically acclaimed film, starring Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar in the lead roles, added another feather to its cap by bagging two trophies at the recently-concluded Filmfare Awards 2018. Besides bagging the Best Film award, Hindi Medium won Irrfan the Best Actor in a Leading Role award
And now, for the fans of the Saket Chaudhary directorial, there is an exciting news. A sequel to the film is in the offing. Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films and Bhushan Kumar of T-Series will reunite for the second part, the scripting of which has almost been completed.
Talking exclusively to us about the project, Dinesh said, “We have just finished typing the second part. We are very excited about it. We need to be very responsible for it because now the film is everybody’s. Now we are happy on the paper. Just finishing touches are being put.”
Divulging details on the process of scripting, the producer said, “We started writing immediately after May-June last year. It has taken us 6-7 months to finish. We had structured the first part in a way which can help us go ahead with the sequel because this kind of film deserves one. Also, it’s important to do franchisable films.”
Excited with Hindi Medium bagging two Filmfare awards, Dinesh said, “It is a very special film. It had this universal acceptance. It happens very rarely and I hope it happens more and more for the business. You don’t know about these things until you are there. But I am really happy with the way Filmfare has backed good content this year. It gives us a lot of encouragement. It will urge you to work harder. That’s what it’s about. I am really happy.”
On being asked if Hindi Medium would have done the same kind of business had it been released 10 years ago, the producer said, “I think it has a lot to do with the growth in the number of theatres. But I feel a good film has always found its audience. Also I feel, Hindi Medium is a timeless subject, a relevant subject. That whole thing of having to know English to get your kid admitted into a good school, guided through.”
As for the star cast of the sequel, he said, “I think you will have to wait for an official announcement for that.”
