Aamir Khan lost out on National Award for Dangal because he never attend award shows? Jury chairperson Priyadarshan speaks up The National Film Awards were declared yesterday and Akshay Kumar has won the Best Actor award for his performance in Rustom. Ever since the news came out, people have expressed their disappointment with the jury’s decision. Among the top performances of 2016 was Aamir Khan‘s performance in Dangal and people are curious to know why the actor didn’t get the award for it. Filmmaker Priyadarshan, who is a part of the jury has finally answered the question. In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, he said, “Aamir recently said that he wouldn’t personally accept the award if he is given one. If I remember, Aamir didn’t attend the ceremony when he won the award for Taare Zameen Par (The film bagged the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare in 2008). So, why spoil it for some other actor who stood as good a chance of winning the award.” We are not sure what to make out of this statement passed by the filmmaker.
Akshay Kumar deserved the award and so we gave it to him. There were a total of 38 jury members with me on this. How can you question the decision of so many people? Ramesh Sippy headed the jury last year. When he gave Best Actor to Amitabh Bachchan for Piku why didn’t anyone question him?,” he added further.
Apart from Akshay, Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja has bagged the award for the Best Hindi film of 2016. Like every year, Amitabh Bachchan has gained much appreciation and recognition for his film Pink which has been felicitated with Best Film on Social Issue award at the 64th National Film Awards. Zaira Wasim, the 15 – year – old girl from Dangal bagged an award for Best Supporting Artist in the film.
